SYNOPSIS – TOGGI
In this series of relief sculptures, artist Þorgeir Ólason, alias Toggi, captures obscure emotions and experiences from his life. Feelings that may be familiar to many. The surface is sophisticated and smooth, much like a modern person wants to be seen, while feelings are boiling and brewing beneath the surface. The artwork reflects this contrast with abstract patterns of complicated feelings such as admiration, love, forgiveness, sympathy, respect, trust, resignation, shame, guilt and anger.
Feelings that often come through in stillness, but occasionally in the noisy storm of everyday life, showing themselves through the mental and physical labour of an individual. A powerful reminder that we are all related through time and space and demands we focus on the human part: to be connected. In these works, several see-through layers illuminate the timeless, unstable and fickle world of emotions each of us lives in. From heavenly, dreamy and supernatural forces, to daring, fervent and rich textures where each stroke, colour and shape reflects a focus to impart an emotional atmosphere, a state of mind or an experience. The energy awakens our spiritual thoughts and serves as a meditative reflection of our experiences and senses. Emotions and emotional experiences which oscillate from loud to quiet, between pleasant and unpleasant. These experiences are what inspired the artist and these reliefs are the result of introspection and self-healing.
The works in the exhibition are created using erosion on copper to create a variety of abstract forms, colours and borders.
