Eitt tré, margar víddir
Joris Rademaker opens his exihibition, ‘One Tree, Many Dimensions, on Friday the 3rd of
October in Deiglan. The opening starts 5PM and is open until 8PM.

This is the third exhibition in a series, where the many different aspects are wood are the
focal point.
This first in the series was ‘The Search for Water’ in 2023 and focused on the roots. In a
deeply personal manner, this connects with the experience of settling in a foreign country,
and being a foreigner.
The second exhibition, ‘Seperate paths’, opened in 2024 and looked at the branches. They
always separate into two’s, again and again, and in this way the tree grows. This is
symbolic for our need to change courses and find new ways to grow – to shake things up.

This upcoming third exhibition is about the whole tree: the roots, the trunk, branches, bark,
leafs, it’s age, it’s production of oxygen and metabolism.
The 13th of October last year there was a great storm with hard south-western winds,
where the biggest and oldest tree in my garden was uprooted completely. This tree that I
had seen every single day and admired for over 30 years.
I was filled with sorrow and sense of loss and it got me thinking about our connection with
the trees. Mountain ash can get as old as a healthy human being – around 80 years. The
trees gives shelter, oxygen and beauty. We use the lumber for firewood, building houses,
making furniture, and even sculptures. The sparrows get food from its’ berries, and get
drunk during fall. The leafs both whisper and shout, depending how the winds blow.
I started working in November and that work evolved into a series in gouache and pen.
Sometimes those drawings were highly detailed, sometimes formalistic or symbolic. In this
exhibition I have picked out 24 pictures.
This spring, I started chopping up that old tree, and from it I’ve made some of the
sculptures in this exhibition.
The exhibition is open for this weekend only. Opening hours for Saturday and Sunday are
from 1PM to 5PM.
The artist will be present during the exhibition hours to welcome guests.
