Please join us for the opening of The Dawning of Night in Deiglan on Saturday, November 23rd hr. 14 \u2013 17. Light refreshments and the artist will be present. Artist in residence, Matt Armstrong will exhibit the products of his stay in Gil Artist Residency. The exhibition will also be open Sunday November 24th hr. 14 \u2013 17.<\/p>\n

Matt Armstrong is a visual artist in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Valdosta State University in 2003. Armstrong\u2019s creative process usually starts concept\/idea first, and then a brainstorm for visual communication follows. \u201cI generally strive to communicate through my art in a conversational way. I tend to gravitate towards concepts of truth and life experience that are widely relatable, and then use visuals to engage to viewer\u2019s mind and imagination. The visual conversation is not meant to be abstract, though the visuals can be either abstract or representative.\u201d Armstrong specializes in acrylic and oil painting as well as charcoal. One of his current series of work is called \u201cDark Sky\u201d which centers around true night visuals of the Milky Way and Aurora Borealis. Here\u2019s an excerpt from the \u201cDark Sky\u201d artist statement:<\/p>\n

One of the major (unintended) consequences of modern urbanization and light pollution is that we aren\u2019t confronted with something as overwhelmingly large and amazing as the cosmos on a consistent, nightly basis, and many of us have lost a natural guidepost that helps us keep our true size, as humans, in context. When I first saw the Milky Way in all it\u2019s glory, one of the words I found that helped describe my experience was I felt \u201econfronted\u201c by the night sky. Yet, I\u2019ve found that feeling smaller, or more \u201cright-sized\u201d, hasn\u2019t made me feel less important or significant. In fact, it caused me to think deeply, ask meta-questions, and ponder greater purposes outside of my normal comforts and day-to-day thinking.\u201d \u201c \u2026My pursuit of this series is an attempt to recapture the important role night plays in people\u2019s lives\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
